Jazzy Jeff is coming to Bristol!

4 May

Hey everyone!

I met a Narwhal the other day and she told me that Jazzy Jeff is in town. I didn’t believe her but she was totally serious and had this flyer stuck on her crazy “Unicorn” horn as you can see from this picture that total happened.

JAZZYJEFF YAY

He is in fact playing at Lakota on Thursday 10th of May in the sexy Bristol, and its going to be sick! He’s up there for me as one of the best cut and scratch artists along with DJ Grandmaster Flash, Mix Master Mike & Qbert. So if you’re free and fancy throwing some shapes to some no doubt classic hip hop go and grab yourself a ticket and I’ll see ya there!

Fair play to Currys

26 Apr

I remember Currys doing this promotion before and thinking how clever it was.

Now they’re doing it again.  And it’s still clever.  Buy any TV or laptop over £549 and register it online, and they’ll give you £10 back for every goal England score in the  Euros.

Why do I like it?  Mainly because it’s simple.  But also because it taps into sport and gambling, and England and the Euros.  It’s very good.  Well done.

I bet they’re not an ‘official’ sponsor either.

When was the last time you went out without your phone?

26 Apr

I read this article by Sherry Turkle on the New York Times website and it made me feel really sad.

In it, Sherry discusses how we’ve sacrificed having a real conversation for simply connecting with people, and cites families sitting together but engrossed with texting or reading emails rather than talking.

I do understand how brilliant technology and social media is for keeping in touch, letting friends and family meet new additions to your family even if they can’t be there in person, etc, and I know how great it can be from a business perspective (if done well!) enabling you to make a connection with your customers and bring your brand to life.

However, I find it amazing that people will now sit in a business meeting with their phone on the table in front of them. And don’t get me started on people who go out for dinner and put their smartphone on the corner of the table so they can keep an eye on it. I also don’t understand why people check in on Facebook, ‘so and so was at this restaurant with so and so’. Stop telling your social network about it and start giving your full attention to the person/people you are with.

I went out last weekend and forgot to take my phone with me, and you know what? The world didn’t end.

In fact, it felt quite liberating.

If I’ve got my phone on me, I’m constantly taking it out of my pocket and checking I haven’t had any new emails or messages. It was lovely to just walk along enjoying the scenery and people watching, and I’m going to try to make a habit of leaving my phone at home.

Perhaps we should all give it a go.

Creative advice from a legend

Bruce Springsteen at SXSW this year. The video above is the short version for the attention deficit among us. The video below is the full version if you want to understand the full context. An incredibly powerful expression about changes , desires, technology and being creative.

Another slow motion post

26 Apr

After being threatened with a hat that is not in compliance with Doner Headphone law, I decided to write a blog post to rid me of the head wear.

We’ve all seen slow-mo videos before; some really slow, some with explosions, some with guns… Never before have I seen one with a drink bottle versus a chainsaw and rake, indoor fireworks and a water bed so filled with water that it fills the room.

All these things and more, after the break.

Nikon D3200 launch

24 Apr

Last week Nikon launched the all new and super easy to use, D3200.

Following our launch emails (which also looked pretty great), we added the D3200 to the growing list of DSLR’s on the Nikon UK Facebook page.

We used this update as an opportunity to take full advantage of the wider layout format introduced with the timeline update. I hope you’ll agree the larger space available for the design really makes a difference.

Nice work from Tic Tac, courtesy of the redoubtable Dan Calladine whose website Digital Examples I once again recommend or, if you work for me, require you to bookmark.

The video title translates as “The Worst Breath in the World”.

Discover the wonderful world of US craft beers.

23 Apr

Here’s a great programme from BBC Radio 4 about the very interesting brewing trends happening in the USA that are having an influence on all UK brewers, including our very own Fuller’s. Find out how the First World War and legal changes introduced by President Jimmy Carter have influenced the current beer market.

I am the new TV ad for the Nikon Coolpix S3300

23 Apr

The latest TV ad in the very successful Nikon I AM campaign hits the small screen today. The ad for the very colourful Nikon Coolpix S3300 features a range of situations that you would definitely want to capture on your camera.

We have certainly found it quite hard not to feel a tear welling up in our eye during the airport scene. And if you are after a great compact camera, the Nikon Coolpix S3300 comes in 7 colours, so there is bound to be one to suit you.

As well as being on TV, the ad is on a wide range of digital media. Happy watching.
